StuperBowl 1984

I found this video on a 40 year old VCR tape that was stashed away in a closet, so I transferred it to digital media. I thought I would put it here for the alumni of the IBM CSD branch office in Northern Indiana (South Bend) to see and remember the fellow IBMers we worked so closely with back in the day.

This video was shown in January 1984 at the first branch office “kick-off” meeting after the South Bend and Ft. Wayne Indiana IBM service offices were merged. There was usually some sort of entertainment at “kick-off meetings” – most of the time in the form of a skit by the managers. This time the administrators and service technicians were asked to create something. The result is the video below.

This was written and story-boarded one evening in January 1984, then shot the following Saturday right after a snow storm. There was no time for rehearsals, and due to the snow we couldn’t access the football field at a nearby Jr. High School as we had planned. But the show must go on, so we filmed in the school’s parking lot where the snow was not quite so deep. The result is certainly not professional, but we had fun.

Note: The football is actually an IBM removable disk pack cover.

Unfortunately, the video quality is not very good, but keep in mind that it was recorded on an early 1980’s VCR camera and editing was done using a rudimentary two-VCR method. It was digitized from a 40 year old third-generation copy on VCR tape.

There was some video lost in the transition from tape to digital that resulted in some choppiness, mostly at the editing cuts. This is probably due to the age of the tape. So you will notice what looks like bad cuts in some places.

It looks better in a small format instead of full-screen.

    Hey Craig and Linda,
I had completely forgotten about doing this crazy stunt. It was really enjoyable to watch.
Thank you both for sending this out to all of us.
I will pass this on to Tom Fields in Florida and anyone else I can find an email address or phone number for.
It is hard to believe that many the people that helped put this together have passed on.
I will try and stay in touch will you both.
    Larry R.
